I haven't been on this forum for long, but the last several hours seemed particularly bad...

I would suggest for an admin to disable registration of new accounts for the short term until a decision is made and implemented that will at least reduce the rate of spam accounts.

I will point out that even though there currently is a math question as part of the registration (and no password, which is a bit worrying), it is something that could be automated reasonably easily - ie. it provides very little protection from bots

although the math equation is relatively easy breakable... captcha, recaptcha are also already broken; but anything would slow them down, be better then nothing.

ModTools, automoderator are passive tools but it will keep the forum clean, or the spammers/dumpsters will flood any forum away. Aany known problem with them?

yes, some nasty amount of spam. Its been increasing with alot of spam coming from mail.ru and one other domain.
I'm thinking of banning them.

It might even be worth deleting all users that have 0 posts. There are a lot of users that registered in the last couple of weeks alone and I highly doubt more than a small handful are legitimate.

It would also be nice to go through and clean up the forum a bit by deleting those posts that are clearly spam (and even deleting the users that are spam only)

Well, that 'introductions' sub-forum will definitely compartmentalize the spam issue . Depending how the spam is being posted, it may reduce the rate of the spam quite a bit too. The number of dormant spam accounts still worries me though.

As an aside, I can't check if it's still true, but the user list was not accessible while 'in limbo'. Seemed a bit odd, losing access to something when logging in.

It doesn't matter anymore, the promotion process is manual. Only a admin can promote a new user to contributor.
With these steps taken by 0xFFFF we'll follow up and evaluate in a few weeks to see.

Those dormant spamaccounts was most likley made by a person manually. given the createtion dates, so it looks like an attempt to disrupt the forum by flooding it with spam. I'm guessing someone is upset with the information on this forum.

Anyway, its pretty much locked down now.
