Anyone going to be at defcon?

Anyone going to be attending defcon? Would be great to meet.

Leave your HID badge at home, though.

Hey, I'm here, enjoying the view from my Treasure Island hotel ...

Someone planning to attend any RFID conferences? Maybe we should meet to say hi smile ?

Re: Anyone going to be at defcon?

I understand there was a "Major Malfunction" at Defcon with regards RFID that involved the Feds getting involved  :-)

Hey Duran,

Did some googling, I found this

Is that what you're talking about or was there more?

Re: Anyone going to be at defcon?

That's it - kind of.  We wouldn't want to have a Major Malfunction around here :-)

Re: Anyone going to be at defcon?

The article gives a pretty impressive figure for the range for that reader.  I wonder if there's a way to get that kind of range out of the proxmark.  Maybe a combination of some type of inline signal amplifier and a better antenna?  Maybe a PCB antenna?  Any thoughts?

Re: Anyone going to be at defcon?

Adam, what sort of reader was being used?  I've looked at longer range readers, but all require an external power source, and therefore not overaly portaable.

Re: Anyone going to be at defcon?

It was a proprietary commercial reader designed to be used at car park entrances and the like, so the user doesn't need to get out of the vehicle or have to get too close...

Re: Anyone going to be at defcon?

The problem with reading LF tags at a distance is two fold. One you have to have a reader that is sensitive enough to detect the tiny modualtion coming from the tag. This isn't too hard, it's what a standard radio does anyway. The other problem is that you have to drive the antenna hard enough so that it induces a large enough voltage in the tag you're trying to read so that it energizes it. Since the EMF field drops off in inverse proportion to the square of the distance you can do the math as to how much power you need to send to create 3v for example across the tag coil from 6feet away.

It's probably why the reader antenna in the picture looked so massive, and by massive I mean not pocket sized smile therefore not covert.

Re: Anyone going to be at defcon?

I get about 5 inches out of a PCProx, which I'm happy with. That's sufficient to stand next to someone in a lift and read their card.
